San Lorenzo is a national park run scientific station high in the Sierra Nevada. Here there are four domitory style cabins where you can relax in the fresh air during the day, and curl up in front of an open fire during the cold nights. The cabins a simple but comfortable with bunk beds, shared bathroom, dining area, kitchen, tables and chairs. The beds have linen and think blankets for the night.
At 2600m above the Caribbean sea, the Cuchilla de San Lorenzo has spectacular views over Santa Marta and Cienega. A short walk higher and you have unbroken views to the high peaks of Pico Simon Bolivar and Pico Coloniar, the highest being 5775m above sea level.
The area is also a mecca for bird watchers as it is possible to see a great number of species endemic to the region here, including the Andean Condor.
If you can get up early and make the 1 hour trek to the ridge before 5:30am, you will be rewarded with an unforgettable sunrise over the peaks of the Sierra Nevada./p>
4 cabins each with private bathroom and kitchen and a small fireplace, each cabin has a capacity for 8 people, there is a BBQ available for guests to use and trails to explore. The kitchen is equipped with pots, pans and cutlery, but no cooking fuel.
The family that maintains the site lives onsite and are available to help.
San Lorenzo Hostel is 2 hours by 4x4 on a difficult mountain track on the Cuchilla de San Lorenzo (San Lorenzo ridge).
San Lorenzo is 2 hours by 4x4 from Minca and the closest shops, you need to bring everything you require.
It gets cold at night, please ensure you bring suitable clothing.
Remember: There are no shops, or restuarants, nor does the hostel provide any. You need to bring all food, water, and cooking fuel.
